Highlights

– Upon winning what is usually perhaps the most controversial category, fast rising new school star Omah Lay who had edged out tight competition from the likes of Tems and Bella Schmurda to snag the next rated award was accompanied on stage by his colleagues Bella Schmurda and Oxlade, a moment music fans have described as heartwarming. We hope to see more displays of love like this in the industry.

Omah Lay also notably dedicated his award to the End SARS protesters.

– Previously the most nominated, Fireboy stole the show as the biggest winner of the night, with nods in the best pop and R and B albums, as well as revelation of the year, best R and B singles and album of the year. Fireboy now ties a previously set record by Wande Coal for most wins in solo categories in one night (5 each).

– Bella Schmurda caused an upright across social media with a grammatical blunder, digging not to deep however, perhaps it was just a testament to the famous line from his debut single.

– Wizkid extended his lead as most awarded artist at the headies awards with 11 wins in total, two of which he added to his name this night, viewers choice for Joro and the biggest category which he is winning for a record breaking third time, artist of the year! (first in 2012, second in 2016)

Congrats Wiz!

Notable snubs

Self acclaimed biggest rapper in Africa was notably snubbed by the Awards ceremony despite being nominated in two categories. Though taking it in good heart as he has shared jokes about it on his social media handles as well as optimism for next year, he was caught bored during the ceremony and as a result was whiling away time with iMessage games.

Most notable snub of the night was of the self acclaimed African giant, Burnaboy who despite being nominated in several categories did not win a single award!
